Exterior Home Maintenance

Cleaning Your Walls, Roofs and Landscape

Cleaning Around Your Garden

Around twice a year, every homeowner has to go through their driveway and garden to carry out maintenance.

If left untended, gardens will grow out of control, moss and algae can build up on your hardscape and patio area leading to slippery areas, and in general, the place will get very untidy.

Stepping in to clear up the garden and driveway at the start of spring and the start of Autumn goes a long way to keeping the entire landscape around your home looking tidy.

Cleaning Your Gutters

Along with clearing down your patio and hardscaped areas, you should always check your guttering system, especially if its downpipe runs onto your patio.

Ensure the gutters are running clear and that the water is not just a build-up of mildew, moss and algae. We recommend using a local roofer for guttering for that job since it can be dangerous climbing around on a ladder to get up to it.

If the downpipe runs across your hardscaped area, it might be a better option to install a channel drain and let the water be drained off underground rather than a chance it can stain your stoned garden or patio.

Cleaning Driveway

Out the front of your driveway, we recommend soft washing the area instead of using a pressure washing system. Too much force can damage the top surface, and the colour looks faded.

If the area is block paving or similar, always make sure to top up the joints in the gaps, and we recommend a sealer is applied (at least two coats). This is not needed every year but maybe every 3rd year, depending on the surface’s condition and wear/tear.

A great tip for general maintenance is to wash down the areas in spring and use a blower in autumn instead of a brush. If the type of work is split up, it makes it much easier to manage, especially in larger areas.

Cleaning Roof

Whilst out the front, you should throw an eye onto your roof or whichever side is the most exposed. Spotting early problems with a roof can go a long way to saving you a significant amount of money.

A quick method is to get a ladder and gently run a water hose over the roof to see if it’s running smoothly and draining away. Look out for any weak spots or missing tiles on the roof.

You should really use roofing contractors for this type of work on your roof since it can get dangerous, and they know which areas to inspect for early signs of roofing damage.

If you need help with your general maintenance, our team at WPC can help since we provide a cleaning and sealing service throughout the region as well.
